When I was bringing up my kids, we worried about them getting accidental burns from fires, irons and pans of scalding liquid.
But now there's a new hazard - hair straighteners, which are a leading cause of under-fives being admitted to hospital with contact burns.
Perhaps Mum's in a hurry getting ready to go out. She leaves her straighteners on the side to cool , dashes out of the room and the toddler grabs hold of them.
However, many mothers don't seem to recognise the problem - a poll commissioned by the Child Accident Prevention Trust for this week's Bottega Veneta handbag Child Safety Week shows that only one in 15 mums regard straighteners as a hazard.
In reality, some can reach 220C, potentially burning your child's skin as badly as an iron.

6 ways to keep safe
(1) GET INTO GOOD HABITS - As soon as you've finished with your straighteners, always switch them off and unplug them. Apply the same rule to all hot appliances.
(2) TAKE CARE WITH HOT DRINKS - Remember hot drinks can scald a child up to 15 minutes after they've been made. (3) BEWARE OF BARBECUES - keep kids well away from barbecues and have a hose or cold water and a first-aid kit handy.

(5) STEAM can burn more than hot water so make sure boiling kettles are well back on work surfaces.
(6) DON'T LIGHT HOUSEHOLD CANDLES when kids are around.
If the worst happens...
Seek medical attention if the child has a minor burn bigger than a postage stamp, any severe burn or a burn to the mouth or throat. And never put butter on a burn!
In the meantime, cool the burned area under a tap or low- pressure shower for at least 10 minutes.
Don't place a child in a bath of cold water as they could get hypothermia. If they're five or over you could use frozen peas as an ice pack, binding it on with a crepe bandage.
Loosen clothing in case of swelling but never remove it if it's sticking to the burn.

City aiming for seventh heaven

Attack on builders - judge rej
A MAN attacked builders working in the shop under his flat after he warned them they were being too noisy.
William Walsh, 42, head-butted one of the workers and tried to assault two others in Cheltenham High Street, Gloucester Crown Court heard.
Walsh ended up with injuries himself after the workmen overpowered him with the help of a passing special constable, the court heard.
Having been found guilty by magistrates of assaulting Ebn Mars and common assault on two other men, Walsh appealed against his conviction and claimed he was the victim of violence, not them.
However, Judge John McNaught, sitting with two magistrates, rejected the appeal and upheld Walsh's conviction.

At 1.15pm, Walsh shouted from his window at Mr Mars, a Bristol University photography student who was working part-time for the fir m.
He complained about the noise, asking Mr Mars if he thought he was 'clever' to be causing it.
A few minutes later, Walsh shouted at another of the workers, Jeremy Pilcher, in the same way.
Walsh then left his flat, walked up to Mr Mars and "thrust his head towards his face, catching him in the mouth with a head-butt", Mr Counsell said.
"It was hard enough to send Mr Mars to the ground. Mr Mars went back into the shop Montega Fake and was followed by Walsh," the barrister said.
"Gordon Young, the owner of the company, told him to leave, but Walsh then attempted to head-butt Mr Pilcher, but missed. He picked up a broom and started to swing it at Mr Young, although there was no impact."
Mr Counsell said Mr Young grabbed hold of Walsh and together with the other workers and a passing special constable he was overpowered and arrested. "He was taken to the police station. He did have some injuries, but we say that was because he had to be restrained because of his behaviour."
Mr Mars told the court he was "shocked and disorientated" when Walsh head-butted him and suffered a cut and swollen lip and was bleeding.
Walsh, in evidence, claimed Mr Mars was abusive to him when he complained about the noise and kicked his dog.
It was the dog pulling on its lead that caused him to bump heads with Mr Mars, he said.
He claimed he was then dragged inside the shop and beaten up by the workmen.
But dismissing the appeal, the judge said although the workmen may have used "an jimmy choo Handbags unnecessary and improper amount of violence" at the end of the incident, the court was satisfied it was Walsh who started it.

Let's hope somebody shops the hooded Taunton teenager who attacked 63-year-old pensioner Jenny Eggleton - all 5ft 2in of her - in broad daylight.
After knocking her to the ground, he grabbed her handbag containing bank cards, personal items and Pounds 70 in cash, and although she bravely held on to it watches d for some 10 yards, with grazed knees and bruised arms she eventually had to let go.
Jenny still had the guts to chase him until he disappeared.
The one shame is that none of the older local lads I know from the area were around to witness this cowardly attack, because if they'd caught him, I'm sure he would think twice about ever doing it again.
Although this type of incident shouldn't ever take place anywhere, it happily doesn't happen very often in Taunton or the other country towns of our region.

I'm pleased to write of the happier side of Taunton life from The Wurzels' experience there last Wednesday, when we performed in what they say is the longest pub in England - the one that stretches from East Street through to Magdalene Street.
The place was packed with people of all ages creating an incredible atmosphere for us to work in, and with not a hint of trouble.
We chat to security staff wherever we play and they always tell us they do not have problems with our crowds, because they all come to have a good time.
And they really do come - from all over, and of all ages.
After the show on Wednesday we chatted to some of the 50 squaddies who had travelled down from Tidworth barracks for the evening.
They were all cracking lads, with some of them due to go off to Afghanistan soon. Come back safely, boys!
We also met a lovely couple who had had an absolute ball all evening. They had left home in Newcastle-upon-Tyne at 4am to come and see us, as they had never done so before.
We are so lucky to have fans like that.
The following day, when my wife Chris and I were in the supermarket, a lady much the same age as Jenny Eggleton came up, all excited, to say her son had bought her a ticket and she had had a brilliant night at our gig.
I don't know how she even managed to see us, because she must have been all of 5ft tall. But it was lovely to meet another satisfied customer who had had a safe night out in Taunton.

Police urge banks to adopt 'no
The man who whipped out a gun and held up Chase Bank in Troy earlier this month could have come out of Central Casting. He was wearing the bank robber's uniform: a billed cap and shades, as well as a moustache.
"If you see a guy (in a bank lobby) with a baseball cap, dark glasses and a moustache (or) beard, it's probably a bank robber, not a customer," said Lt. But Chase Bank spokeswoman Nancy Norris said Chase doesn't use the policy in any of its markets because "we think it is too difficult to apply fairly and without discrimination to all our customers." Some people may wear head coverings for religious reasons, or sunglasses because of a vision problem.
"We would like to reduce bank robberies, as well," Norris said. "I can say our people are well trained and observant in what's going on in a branch."
The no-hat policy strips would-be robbers of their disguises, making them more identifiable to witnesses and on securitycamera footage. Robbers use cell phones to cover their faces, to take photos to case the bank layout and to communicate with accomplices.
Trombitas said 90 percent of bank robbers use the hats/hoods/ sunglasses disguise. They like to blend in with other customers until they reach the teller window, where they display a robbery note or a gun.
"He knows we're going to get a great picture of his ball cap as he's waiting in line," Trombitas said.
The no-hat policy "forces them to make a decision," he said. If the robber complies, he becomes more identifiable. If he doesn't, "he's now the rule breaker. Everybody's looking at him, which is exactly what he doesn't want."
A number of local financial institutions, including Liberty Bank and Triangle Credit Union, have used the policy for a year or more. In recent weeks, National City Bank's area branches have adopted parent PNC's no-hat policy.
"We believe it makes good sense for our customers and our employees," said PNC spokesman Fred Solomon. "We recognize that not every customer who comes through the door with a hat or sunglasses on is Damier azur Replica a security threat. (But) it helps to discourage people who have intentions to rob the facility."
Fifth Third Bank has considered the policy, but hasn't implemented it. "The greatest challenge is how do you enforce that?" said spokeswoman Lea Ann Stevenson. Car owners are not getting the message about crime and are asking for their vehicles to be broken into, New Plymouth police say.
Senior Sergeant Selwyn Wansbrough told the Taranaki Daily News small valuable items such as laptops, GPS units and radar detectors are popular targets for thieves and people needed to use common sense with their belongings.
"Take care, put away valuable items, lock them in your glovebox or boot," he said. "We keep repeating the same message but some people set themselves up to be victims."

DAYTON -- The Dayton affiliate of Habitat for Humanity was not selected as a pilot project for a new initiative aimed at rebuilding crumbling neighborhoods in urban communities, its executive director said Friday, July 2.

Defendant 'I found shot cabbie
A 61-YEAR-OLD man accused of murdering a taxi driver told police he found his body during a visit to a railway station.
Stuart Ludlam, from Darley Dale, was discovered in the back of his taxi by a passer-by at Cromford station in September last year.
The 43-year-old father-ofthree had two gunshot wounds to the head, the second believed to have been the one that killed him.
Colin Cheetham, from Ripley, denies murdering Mr Ludlam.
He said he discovered Mr Ludlam's body when he returned to the station to try and find a camera lens cloth he believed he had dropped there earlier.
In a police interview read out to a Nottingham Crown Court jury yesterday, Cheetham said he hermes birkin 30cm drove into the station and spotted Mr Ludlam's parked car with the driver's door open.
The interview was read out by Detective Constable Sharon Bassett and prosecutor Sarah Knight.
DC Bassett read the part of the interviewing officer, Miss Knight Cheetham's responses.
Miss Knight, as Cheetham, said: "I shouted something like 'hello, driver, can you shut your door please'. There was no answer.
I got out of the car, I moved forward to it.
"(I thought it was) Possibly an accident, a bang, and he has gone for help - that type of thing went through my mind.
"I could see a head in the back corner of the car. As I came round the corner I could see his right arm hanging out of the back of the window.
"I bally handbags could see blood, trails of blood running down the side of the tailgate."
Cheetham, of Waingroves Road, was asked by the interviewing officer what his reaction to the alleged discovery, on September 17, had been.
The defendant said he recalled a former colleague telling him about the time he found a body and was arrested and questioned about it.
Cheetham said he feared the same would happen to him if he contacted the police.
In interview, he said: "My mind was working overtime. It was still coming to me, don't get involved, it's not your problem, it's not your business. "I wanted to get help for him. I thought he was dead. I was fairly certain he was dead."
Cheetham told the interviewing officer he saw a wound on Mr Ludlam's head he thought was similar to a gunshot wound.
James Norseman, a crime scene manager with Derbyshire police, told the jury forensic scientists had not been able to see any visible wounds on Mr Ludlam body at first.
He said: "It was not until some stage later when we raised the boot of the vehicle and we were able to have a close examination of his head that we were directed towards some injuries to his head."
Prosecutor Peter Joyce QC said: "Until then, could you see he Fake Fashion Breguet Handbag had been shot?" Mr Norseman replied: "No." The trial continues.

Land Rover has come to realise the style appeal of the Defender these days and you can get a range of chunky alloy wheels, extra brightwork for the front, and aluminium chequer plate panels for the body to add sparkle. They also have a sensible use - when fitted to the front wing tops they allow you to stand on the body to reach a roof rack or to use it as a grandstand.

How would you explain the valuation gap that exists between PSU stocks and the rest of the market?
There are a lot of issues. There is a perception issue such as in banks and there are regulation issues such as in oil, where a large PSU oil company is trading at a discount because it bears the burden of subsidies. We'll invest in both. We'll deploy the money, we don't hold cash. We believe in generating excess returns through stock selection rather than holding cash and timing the market.

But trust me on this, what The Lady represents - making the best of yourself and the most of your limited time on this earth - is making a comeback.
Just think of the extraordinary popularity of the TV reality series Ladette To Lady, which takes a bunch of thong-twanging, bingedrinking girls and incarcerates them for six long weeks in Eggleston Hall finishing school, with miraculous, transformational results that would have Professor Higgins bursting with pride.
The girls land with cans of extrastrength lager and Lord knows what else in their wheel-on luggage, and leave like princesses, with a self-confidence they never dreamed was within their reach.
Meanwhile, their parents are sobbing their eyes out as the girls make speeches in which they thank the middle-aged staff - not for coaching them in how to curtsey before royalty or which fish knife to use - but for imbuing them with the inestimable value of learning manners, courtesy and self-respect.

A GLOBAL fashion giant was yesterday at the centre of a discrimination row after a controversial job advert for "cool and good-looking" staff was put up at a new Scottish store.
The American-based retail clothing firm Abercrombie & Fitch is due to open its first store north of the Border in the new Union Square mall in Aberdeen.
But the company has sparked a storm of protest after erecting a recruitment poster that reads: "We are looking for cool and good-looking people to come and represent our brands."
Last year Abercrombie & Fitch was ordered to pay GBP 9,000 to Riam Dean, 22, a law student with a prosthetic arm, who claimed she was banished to the stockroom of the firm's flagship store in London's Savile Row because she did not fit its "look" policy. An employment tribunal in London ruled she had been wrongfully dismissed and the company had "violated" Miss Dean's dignity.
Anne Begg, Labour MP for Aberdeen South, TAG Heuer Monaco who is disabled, said: "I don't have any Dior Handbags problem with the advert. But it's what they define as cool and good-looking that might be a problem. There are plenty of disabled people who are cool and good-looking. If they were to define being cool as being non-disabled, then that would be discriminatory." She added: "There is no age discrimination under the legislation so they can discriminate on the grounds of age. But there are some pretty cool older people in any case. Are they going to turn away George Clooney? I don't think so."
Kelly Cumming, 22, who lost her leg to cancer, also hit out at the company's stance. She said: "I love Abercrombie & Fitch's clothes - but what they're doing is not right. The advert will definitely put disabled people off from applying. Given the shop's track record it's going to make people very wary."
David Hughes, an employment law partner at Simpson & Marwick solicitors in Aberdeen, said the advert itself did not breach the laws on discrimination, but it could create a legal inference that the employer intended to apply unlawful or discriminatory practices in hiring staff.
A spokesman for Abercrombie & Fitch refuted the discrimination claims. He said: "Abercrombie & Fitch has a strong anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policy and is committed to ensuring a diverse work force and to providing equal employment opportunities to all individuals. We are looking for fun people with a great appearance and sense of style to represent our brand and market our clothes."
He added: "Diversity is always an important part of our staffing strategy. We believe there are fun people with great appearance and sense of style from all backgrounds and walks of life and we do not tolerate discrimination in hiring or employment."

Three major British retailers are closing their premises in northern France, according to an industry report.
It seems British shoppers no longer regard catching the ferry across the Channel to stock up on wine and beer as a cheap option.
The spending power of sterling against the euro has plunged by a quarter in just three years, and with many supermarkets in the UK offering cheap alcohol, the hypermarkets of North-West France are losing their bargain basement appeal.
The recent recession has exaggerated this trend, and alcohol retailers in Calais said business had been 'dead' in the lead-up to last Christmas, traditionally one of the busiest periods of the year.
Now three major outlets that capitalised on Britain's thirst for booze cruises are expected to close, says the report by The Grocer magazine. Staff at Tesco Vin Plus in Calais have been consulted over a closure, while Sainsbury's is to shut down its Calais Wine Store at the end of the month after describing its partnership with the French retailer Auchan as no longer 'economically viable'.
A third large outlet, Oddbins Calais, closed earlier this year and the company has confirmed its franchise agreement had come to an end.
Yesterday a Sainsbury's spokesman said: 'Sainsbury's and Auchan have made the difficult decision to close Sainsbury's Calais.
'Thirteen colleagues have been informed that their jobs are victorian Stamping Bangle at risk and will be offered redeployment opportunities by the co-shareholders.' The store is now advising that customers call before heading to the Calais outlet and has cancelled online ordering there as stock is limited.

However it said it would stay in France, claiming the difference in duty was still wide enough to attract savvy shoppers.
But Nick and Ann Lewis, from Chelmsford, Essex, are not so sure. The couple visited Calais in December, but on the way back from another destination, rather than making a special trip.
Mr Lewis, a retired health and safety worker, said: 'The exchange rate has killed it. We used to come over here about three times a year, but it's hardly worth it any more.
'By the time you work out how much you've spent getting here you're hardly saving any money.' In March, Oddbins boss Simon Baile predicted a 'complete revolution' in the number and size of stores in Calais, with hypermarkets almost empty even at peak times.
