Manuj Natraj, an engineering student who swears by cyber dating, sees no harm in it. "The traditional argument for not using the internet to meet someone is that it is not 'natural'. So what is natural?" he asks. "Traditional means of meeting your spouse also have their pitfalls."

Youngsters also blame the hectic work schedule and fast pace of life for not having time to date people in the flesh. Aarathi Sivadas, working at an MNC says, "We spend most of our time working and don't have enough opportunities to meet new people outside office. In such a scenario the only option available is to date someone online. Youngsters spend a lot of time online, so it makes sense."

Those who stay away from cyber dating, feel that it's not the best way to enter a serious relationship. "Cyber dating is for sad, desperate, geeky or freaky people," says Amrita Rao Upadhrastha. While many youngsters argue that cyber dating is harmless, counsellors warn of the dangers lurking in over-indulgence and over-dependence. Dr Aruna Reddy informs, "Youngsters who are oppressed continuously in life or who have had unsound serious relationships opt for cyber dating and blind dating." She goes on to add, "Cyber dating abuse leads to break-ups and can have major repercussions such as depression, which in turn cause mental trauma and also lead to insomnia, which results in major mental disorders. It mainly affects the lives of young children and young adults, due to their lack of maturity."
