THE shop where one of the most popular ever children's authors once bought sweets as a child will be commemorated today.

Roald Dahl's widow Felicity and son Theo are expected in Cardiff for the unveiling of a blue plaque at the shop, which is now The Great Wall Chinese takeaway in Llandaff.

The store was made famous by Dahl in his autobiography Boy. In that he recounted the Great Mouse Plot of 1923 which resulted in the seven-year-old Dahl being caned at Llandaff Cathedral School. The plot saw him putting a dead mouse in a jar of jawbreakers in the shop at 11 High Street.

Today's commemoration comes a day after the annual Roald Dahl Day was marked by cake decorating, clay modelling and storytelling at the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay.

Amelia Foster, director of the Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, where the author penned most of his books, said: "We were involved in this from the beginning because the Llandaff Society asked if we could help in identifying which shop was actually the sweet shop.

"Our wonderful archivist did lots of digging. We spoke to Liccy [Felicity] as well because Roald once took her to the shop to point it out."

She said erecting a blue plaque was a "fantastic" idea, adding: "I think Roald would think this was quite amazing. I wouldn't want to put words in his mouth, but I'm sure he would be amazed."

Replica watches Llandaff Society chairman Geoff Barton-Greenwood said he hoped the event would engage the whole of the community.

He said: "We have decorated the windows of the takeaway with sweet jar drawings and actual sweet jars."

Geoff added: "We're absolutely ecstatic about it. We're on top of the world about it.

"We think it's marvellous and we hope it gives Llandaff a huge boost."

Every afternoon, when the last lesson was over, the five of us would wait until the classroom had emptied, then we would lift up the floorboard and examine our secret hoard, perhaps adding to it or taking something away.

When I turned round, I saw Mrs Pratchett holding out the bootlace in her filthy fingers.

When writing about oneself, one must strive to be truthful. Truth is more important than modesty. I must tell you, therefore, that it was I and I alone who had the idea for the great and daring Mouse Plot. We all have our moments of brilliance and
